CPR vs First Aid: What's the Difference and Which Course Do I Need?
If you've been looking into training and keep seeing "CPR" and "First Aid" listed as separate courses, you're not alone in wondering whether you need one, the other, or both. They're closely related, but they're not the same thing — and picking the right one can save you time, money, and make sure you're actually covered for what your workplace (or your own peace of mind) requires.
What CPR (HLTAID009) actually covers
CPR — Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation — is a single, focused skill: what to do when someone's heart has stopped or they've stopped breathing. The course covers:
Recognising cardiac arrest
Performing chest compressions and rescue breaths in line with Australian Resuscitation Council (ARC) guidelines
Using an Automated External Defibrillator (AED)
Responding to choking
It's short — usually a couple of hours — because it's narrow in scope. It doesn't cover bandaging, fractures, burns, or anything beyond the immediate life-support response.
What Provide First Aid (HLTAID011) covers
Provide First Aid is the broader course, and it actually includes CPR as one of its modules. On top of CPR and AED use, it covers how to respond to:
Bleeding and wound management
Fractures, sprains, and soft tissue injuries
Burns
Allergic reactions and anaphylaxis
Asthma attacks
Seizures
Diabetic emergencies
Shock and unconsciousness
Because it covers so much more ground, it runs longer — typically closer to a full day — and results in a broader Statement of Attainment covering multiple units of competency.
So which one do you actually need?
Choose CPR (HLTAID009) if:
Your employer specifically requires CPR certification only
You're due for your annual CPR refresher (see our other post on renewal timelines — CPR needs updating every 12 months, even if you hold a full first aid certificate)
You want the fastest, most affordable option to cover the single most critical emergency skill
Choose Provide First Aid (HLTAID011) if:
Your workplace requires a nominated "first aid officer" — this almost always requires the full certificate, not CPR alone
You want to be prepared for a wider range of everyday emergencies, not just cardiac arrest
You're due for your 3-year first aid renewal
Not sure which your employer needs? Most WA workplaces specify "Provide First Aid" or "HLTAID011" in their compliance requirements, since it's the broader, more commonly mandated qualification. If in doubt, check with your workplace's WHS officer or manager before booking — it's a quick question that can save you booking the wrong course.
Already hold a First Aid certificate?
If you completed your full HLTAID011 within the last 3 years, you don't need to redo the whole course again — you likely just need a CPR-only refresher to keep the CPR component of your certificate current, since that part expires annually regardless of when your full certificate was issued.
